The Women Leadership Project

The Women Leadership Project is an initiative aimed at increasing women’s participation in leadership roles in Lindi and Mtwara regions of Tanzania. Launched in 2020, the project focuses on addressing gender disparities in leadership across political, social, and economic sectors. It supports women in taking leadership positions in local governments, community organizations, and other sectors by overcoming barriers such as cultural norms and limited opportunities. Through training, awareness campaigns, and collaboration with local governments and stakeholders, the project empowers women to become active decision-makers and promotes gender equality. The ultimate goal is to enhance women’s rights, increase their representation in leadership, and foster long-term societal change for equal leadership opportunities for both men and women.

Results:
The project successfully reached 100 potential women across both the Lindi and Mtwara regions, providing capacity building in social, economic, and political leadership as well as on gender concepts. The project also strengthened the relationship between the women and government leaders, helping to ensure the establishment of a friendly environment for women’s participation in leadership. As a result of the capacity building, the confidence of the trained women increased significantly. Many women are now eager to contest various leadership positions.

In the 2024-2025 local government elections, 31 women bravely contested for leadership positions in the Mtwara and Lindi regions. Out of these, 25 women won the elections and secured leadership positions. Many of the remaining women candidates have pledged to contest in the national elections. The women’s leadership agenda has expanded beyond just empowering women. The community has become more aware and sensitized to the importance of women in leadership through call-in talk shows, community meetings, and poster distributions.
