Mtwara Emergency Preparedness Project

With financial support from Plan International, we implemented a 6-month project in 2022 in Mtwara DC. The project sensitize and raise awareness within the community on child protection, gender equality, adolescent sexual reproductive health, mental health, psychosocial support, WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene), and psychological first aid. It focused on strengthening community-level protection structures, particularly those designed to support women, girls, men, and boys who are facing violence due to the Cabo Delgado crisis.

Geographical Coverage;

The project covered one region (Mtwara), one district council (Mtwara DC), and nine wards (Tangazo, Ziwani, Msimbati, Naumbu, Nalingu, Mahurunga, Nanguruwe, Moma, and Madimba). However, Door of Hope Tanzania implemented the project in three wards: Moma, Mahurunga, and Nanguruwe.

In total, the organization reached 3,307direct beneficiaries (2,056 females, 1251 males), including 73 people with disabilities (PWD)

Results/Outcomes

  1. Increase awareness of protection in the border areas of Mozambique focusing on the need to safeguard vulnerable populations. As a result, community members, local leaders, and stakeholders in these areas gained a better understanding of the risks and challenges posed by violence and conflict, especially due to the Cabo Delgado crisis. This increased awareness led to stronger community engagement in protection efforts and improved support systems for those affected by violence, enhancing overall community resilience and safety.
  2. Increasing community awareness about various child protection reporting systems and channels, as well as the different forms of child abuse like recruitment of children into armed groups, child labor, trafficking and their effects on children physically, emotionally, and spiritually while also fostering a supportive environment for children’s overall development.
  3. Strengthened collaboration between the organization and the government, including Local Government Authority (LGA) leaders, through mobilization visits to the implementation wards and build strong partnerships and improve coordination between the organization and government authorities.
  4. Project initiative successfully educated key stakeholders, including health service providers, guardians, and community leaders, on the referral pathways for accessing healthcare and support services. By enhancing their understanding of the process, the project ensured that these groups are better equipped to identify and refer individuals in need of services to the appropriate channels.
  5. Enhanced the understanding of both PSEAH and COVID-19 among community members, service providers, and stakeholders. As a result, individuals are more aware of the risks, prevention strategies, and support mechanisms related to sexual exploitation, abuse, and harassment, as well as the safety measures and health protocols necessary to protect against COVID-19. This increased knowledge helps create safer, healthier communities and ensures better adherence to protective measures for both personal and public health.
