AMUA Project

Main Goals

To strengthen transparency and accountability systems in the health sector to facilitate access to quality healthcare services in the Mtwara Mikindani Municipality. It actively engages various stakeholders, decision-makers, and the general public on the importance and necessity of ensuring transparency and accountability in the health sector.

Results/Outcomes

  1. Strengthen Systems of accountability at District, Ward and Mtaa level
  2. Increased Transparence and Accountability at local level (District, Ward and Mtaa)
  3. Plans, budget, laws and policies reflect citizen’s priorities

Activities implemented 2022/2023

  1. Conduct one day Scrutiny session within 3 Wards development committees (WDCs) that will bring together 20 participants each ward.
  2. Organize and conduct community open meetings to sensitize good governance and select SAM team members.
  3. Conduct District first health stakeholders’ meetings to introduce all SAM team members, and highlight terms of references for SAM exercise.
  4. Facilitate a comprehensive 4 days training to 15 SAM team members on SAM System and document analysis.
  5. Coordinate 2 days field visit by 15 SAM team members for verification and documentation of SAM journal.
  6. Preparation of questioners for CHMT internal meeting and Compile SAM draft report to be conducted by 15 SAM team members.
  7. The members of the SAM team held a meeting with the CHMT to request clarification, confirmation, validation, and correction of identified health issues.
  8. Conducting the final district meeting with health sector stakeholders to present the draft of the Social Accountability Monitoring (SAM) exercise and highlight the key guidelines for the SAM process.
  9. Strengthening and building the capacity of three Health Facility Governing Committees (HFGCs) at three health centers, namely Likombe, Ufukoni, and Rwelu.
  10. Conducting three radio programs aimed at presenting the results of the SAM exercise and raising public awareness on the importance of Transparency and Accountability.

Activity Implemented 2023/2024

  1. Strengthening and building the capacity of 8 Health Facility Governing Committees (HFGCs) at 8 health centers, namely: Likombe, Ufukoni, Rwelu, Chuno, Mikindani, Mtawanya, Mbawala Chini, and Naliendele.
  2. Building the capacity of SAM team members in advocating for the improvement of community services.

Afya Yangu ni Muhimu, Uwajibikaji ni Lazima- AMUA project

The AMUA project began its implementation in 2022, with funding from the Foundation for Civil Society (FCS). It was carried out using the Social Accountability Monitoring (SAM) approach, a strategy that engages the local community in monitoring and ensuring the effective, responsible, and transparent delivery of health services. This approach encourages individuals to actively participate in tracking the delivery of health services, thereby holding both service providers and local authorities accountable for maintaining high health standards and ensuring that services reach the intended beneficiaries.

Geographical Coverage;

From 2022 to 2024, the project covered one (01) regions which is Mtwara, one (01) district councils (Mtwara MC), and three (09) wards(Likombe, Ufukoni, Rwelu, Chuno, Mikindani, Mtawanya, Mbawala Chini, and Naliendele).

In total, the organization reached 3899 direct beneficiaries (1491 females, 2408 males), including 17 people with disabilities (PWD).
